The Health Ranger Mike Adams and Todd Pitner welcomed blockchain educator and cryptocurrency advocate Ashton Addison on “Decentralize TV” to discuss the current state and future of cryptocurrency, with a special focus on privacy and the evolving landscape of digital finance.
Addison, the founder and producer of the “Crypto Coin Show” on YouTube, shared his unique journey as a “decentralized nomad.” He and his wife traveled the world, exploring potential places to settle down.
Their journey took them to crypto hotspots like Tulum in Mexico – where he spoke at the Tulum Crypto Club – and El Salvador, which made headlines with its ambitious Bitcoin City project. Despite the allure of these crypto-friendly locales, Addison and his wife ultimately chose to settle in Austin, Texas. They were drawn to the City of the Violet Crown’s burgeoning Bitcoin community and favorable regulatory environment.
The conversation delved into the evolution of Bitcoin, which has shifted from its original vision as a fast, cheap, transactional currency to being widely regarded as “digital gold.” Adams expressed skepticism about Bitcoin’s ability to fulfill its initial promise, citing the block size wars and the rise of layer-two solutions like the Lightning Network.
Addison acknowledged these challenges but highlighted the growing adoption of Bitcoin – particularly with the launch of Bitcoin ETFs, which have attracted billions in investments.
“If you are buying ETFs, which is not buying Bitcoin, you’re not owning Bitcoin at all,” he said. “You’re more like owning stocks that have exposure to Bitcoin.”
Pitner raised concerns about the increasing surveillance and potential manipulation of Bitcoin, especially with the advent of ETFs. This led to a discussion about privacy coins like Monero, Epic Cash and Zano that offer enhanced privacy features.
Addison admitted that while privacy coins are technically sound, their adoption faces hurdles due to the additional complexity they introduce. However, he noted that a significant event, such as a government crackdown on Bitcoin transactions, could trigger a mass migration to privacy coins. The trio emphasized the critical importance of self-custody in the crypto world. Addison warned against the risks of leaving cryptocurrencies on exchanges, citing the recent example of an exchange urging users to withdraw their funds.
He stressed the need for users to take control of their assets, highlighting the “Not Your Keys, Not Your Coins” movement and its annual reminder on Jan. 3, the anniversary of Bitcoin’s first minting. The conversation then took an exciting turn as Addison discussed the growing intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and blockchain.
The CEO of EventChain highlighted the potential of AI agents to revolutionize crypto trading by managing portfolios and executing trades autonomously. However, he also warned of the risks associated with AI, such as the possibility of market manipulation and the need for robust security measures.
Adams raised the intriguing idea of using cryptocurrency to bring transparency to government spending. He envisioned a public blockchain where all government transactions would be visible, potentially curbing corruption and waste. Addison agreed, noting that while this would require significant changes in how governments operate, it could be a powerful tool for accountability.
As the discussion wrapped up, Addison offered valuable advice for those looking to enter the crypto space. He emphasized the importance of taking action, learning about blockchain technology, and staying informed about AI advancements. He also encouraged viewers to explore how blockchain can be applied to their areas of interest, whether it’s data storage, transactions, or other sectors.
“It’s just about taking action. You have to have faith, and you need to take that step yourself as well. It’s never too late,” Addison said.
Pitner echoed Addison’s sentiments, urging viewers to invest in Bitcoin and resist the temptation to chase after speculative altcoins. He emphasized the long-term potential of Bitcoin and the importance of holding onto it for the future.
